Incorporated in 1811 as "Lubeck", Lubec (Loo-BEC)  was named for Lubeck, Germany. Located approximately 11 miles east of the intersection of Routes 1 and 189, Lubec is the easternmost community in the United States.

Lubec once was the center of America's sardine canning industry.  Those "good old days" are remembered in the Rier Museum (currently closed), LUBEC LANDMARKS, INC., as well as in the Lubec Historical Society's Old Columbian Store.

The WEST QUODDY HEAD LIGHT KEEPERS ASSOCIATION opened a new Visitors Center in May of 2002 in the West Quoddy Head Light keeper's house in QUODDY HEAD STATE PARK - 480 acres with walking trails along the Bold Coast.

The wheelchair-accessible Visitors Center and Art Gallery is open to the public free of charge from late May to mid October.  While visiting the park, stroll through lush evergreen forest and walk the boardwalk through a peat bog featuring rare plant life. Enjoy great views of Canadian islands, as well as frequent whale and seal sightings.  Read about the visitor center in the May 2002 issue of Lighthouse Digest.

 

Q: Why is the easternmost point in the U.S. called "West" Quoddy Head?   A: "East" Quoddy Head is located a short distance away over the border on Campobello Island, (NB, Canada), and lies slightly more east than West Quoddy Head.
