Welcome to the Cobscook Bay region of Washington County, Maine.  Come enjoy the Maine coast at still reasonable prices.

This is a place of peace, quiet, and great natural beauty.  Also, Washington County is the only coastal New England county that met the federal air pollution standards for ozone, according to information published by the US Environmental Protection Agency in April 2004.

The name "Cobscook" comes from the Indian word meaning "boiling tides." Cobscook Bay is  part of the Bay of Fundy, well known for its extreme tides.   We have lighthouses and lobsters and a whole lot more!

We exist to promote our area and our members. Our goal is to promote an increasingly effective business climate that sustains our members and our natural environment. The Chamber belongs to the Maine State Chamber’s Alliance of Maine Chambers and to the Maine Tourism Association.

The Cobscook Bay Area is known in the birding community as an excellent bird watching location.  In recognition, this Chamber and other organizations sponsor the Down East Spring Birding Festival over the Memorial Day Weekend.  The first annual festival took place in 2004.  Altogether during the past four festivals, participants have found 208 different birds.  Planning has begun for the Fifth Annual festival, May 23-26, 2008

What else can you do here?  You can enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, fishing, golfing,  hunting, bicycling, lighthouse watching, lobsters, snowmobiling and snow-shoeing, whale watching, and great nature photography.  Antique dealers, art galleries, and museums also compete for your attention.

The Bay area also is convenient to nearby attractions.  Tour Burnham Tavern Museum in Machias - the oldest building east of Bangor and the only one with a Revolutionary War history.  View 1,500-year old petroglyphs in Machias Bay.  Celebrate the St. Croix Island International Historic Site in both the U.S. and Canada.  Visit Calais's Downeast Heritage Museum. St. Stephen's Chocolate Museum and Canada's oldest seaside resort town - St. Andrews.

Your visit to the Cobscook Bay area will be enhanced if you choose to visit neighboring Canadian attractions.  See our Campobello Island page for attractions on that island, located across a short bridge from Lubec.  Other Canadian attractions are noted above.

U.S. citizens wishing to visit Canada should consider bringing passports, or for minor children - their birth certificates, to facilitate crossing the Canadian border and returning to the USA.  (Click here to see current requirements.)   If you are traveling into Canada with your dog, you will need proof of rabies vaccination for the animal.

And the Cobscook Bay area is only 2 hours from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park!

The Chamber began in March 2000 with support from the Sunrise County Economic Council and with guidance from the Eastport Area Chamber. Since then, the Cobscook Bay Area Chamber has grown to around 80 members. We are a non-profit organization registered with the State of Maine. The IRS has granted us an exemption from payment of federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(6).
